Hematology is the medical specialty concerned with diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and vascular system including immunologic disorders and the ability of the blood to clot properly. Hematologists diagnose, treat, and work to prevent blood disorders. They work closely with primary care providers and specialists including oncologists because conditions of the blood have connections to many other diseases including cancer.

Blood, bleeding, and platelet disorders can be highly complex and include such diseases as leukemia, multiple myeloma, anemia, polycythemia, hemophilia, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. In addition to directly treating blood disorders and diseases, hematologists often provide guidance to other providers when patients need elective procedures or pre/post-partum care.
