Family Medicine

Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive, personalized health care for individuals and families across all ages and genders. Family medicine physicians must include each organ system and a wide range of conditions and diseases including behavioral disorders in their practices. They examine patients; take medical histories; prescribe medications; and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. Preventive healthcare is a strong component of family practice so physicians stress the importance of understanding risk factors for disease and the value of preventive screenings.

They often serve as advocates in all health matters related to their patients and are knowledgeable about other health services, specialists, and community resources. They work closely with their patients to understand the relationship of the patient within the family, the workplace, and the community. The goal of family medicine is to help patients achieve their best health through a lasting and caring relationship with their physician.
