Holiday Health

The connection between carrying too much weight and the development of dangerous chronic illnesses is no longer in doubt. Studies show that diabetes, heart disease and other debilitating conditions thrive as weight rises beyond a healthy level. All too often, we don’t even notice the pounds creeping up until zippers no longer zip and bulges appear around the waistline.

During the holidays, it’s more difficult than usual to keep weight under control, given all the temptations on the holiday tables. This certainly isn’t the time of year to deny the pleasures of the season. However, there are some weight control techniques that won’t ruin the fun. Try these:

    •    Hydrate with plenty of water to help curb cravings for unhealthy foods.
    •    Get nutty with nuts (if you’re not allergic). Pistachios are delicious, healthy, and filling.
    •    Go to bed early. Studies show that late-night is prime time for snacking.

Track your daily diet with a mobile phone app. It’s a great way to keep score and prove to yourself how well you’re doing. Make this year’s holiday season the healthiest one yet.
